P R O J E C T

This project began as something small, then almost immediately spiraled out of control. I started with a Google sheet, where I tried to compile as many women artists’ birthdays as I could find on the Internet and in a few art libraries around Los Angeles. Then it turned into a physical calendar (coming May 2025), which turned into a zine, which turned into a substack. The zine portions of the document serve as little interludes between each month, filled with interesting women, art movements, oddities, and projects I discovered during my research.

The substack will take it further — I will only publish once per month, featuring 3 artists: 2 living, 1 dead. One of the living artists will complete my Proust-inspired birthday questionnaire. There will also be art book recommendations and, inevitably, astrology.

This project has taken months, requiring so much research and data entry — two rote, uncreative tasks that have nonetheless brought me massive comfort and a sense of control during this particular time in my life. The research asks nothing of me except that I look. The data asks nothing of me except that I input. There’s no deadline and no one to answer to.

Thank you for taking the time to interact with my work. Like the women in this project, I too am a working (and playing) artist. My birthday is June 7.

Jackie

I created the largest online database of women artists' birthdays ever compiled. My monthly newsletter features 3 artists -- 2 living, 1 dead - and my Proust-inspired birthday questionnaire, plus art book recommendations and probably inevitably astrology.
